When Research Comes Alive – Highlights from the evoUni Γ— evoARC Workshop with a Humanoid Robot

On March 26, the Multivibrator Room once again turned into a buzzing space full of research, technology and hands‑on innovation. This year’s evoUni Γ— evoARC workshop brought robotics, AI and industrial research together, and for the first time ever, the spotlight was shared by two robots: the Unitree humanoid robot from Γ“buda University’s Bejczy Antal Robotics Center, and evosoft’s own Flattering Bob.

Their first meeting added an extra spark to the event, the kind that happens when research starts to move, react… and sometimes even send heart emojis.

A dynamic Look Into a growing research ecosystem

The event began with an overview of evoUni’s current focus areas presented by Katalin Herczeg, University Relations & Communications Coordinator, who highlighted the latest developments and upcoming opportunities in our research ecosystem; this was followed by LΓ‘szlΓ³ Sajben, SmartCompetence and evoARC project lead, together with Bence Kiss, who shared, who shared how theyare working together to build a dynamic, continuously evolving β€œliving technology radar”. And finally BalΓ‘zs Gigler and Zsombor KovΓ‘cs introduced the topic of Agentic AI, showing real examples where AI already supports workflows as an autonomous contributor.

πŸŽ“πŸ€– Main Attraction: Live PhD Info Session Γ— Humanoid Robot Demo

The moment everyone was waiting for arrived when the Unitree humanoid robot walked into the room β€” and instantly became the center of attention.
Its real‑time balance, movement and responsiveness created an experience no video could match. Suddenly, research wasn’t just a concept, it was standing right in front of us.

Guest speakers enriched the session with engaging insights:

  • Dr. habil. GΓ‘bor KertΓ©sz (Vice Dean for Research, Γ“E NIK) – a clear and motivating overview of PhD possibilities

  • AndrΓ‘s MakΓ‘ny (R&D Associate, Γ“buda University’s Bejczy Antal Robotics Center)‍ – a captivating demonstration of the humanoid robot’s capabilities and his research topics

πŸ—£οΈ Roundtable: What Research Looks Like from the Inside

Moderated by Imre HorvΓ‘th, the roundtable discussion brought honesty, humor and real stories from researchers.
Many participants walked away thinking:
πŸ‘‰ β€œMaybe I could actually do this PhD thing…”

evosoft’s PhD colleagues, AzΓ‘r VΓ‘mos, DΓ‘niel Ferenczi, DΓ‘niel Nagy, GΓ‘bor Sterczl β€” along with two external guests, shared what they work on, why they chose the PhD path, and how they balance industrial work with academic research.

πŸ• Snacks, Laughter… and a Tiny Bit of Robot Romance

After the lively exchange between doctors and doctoral students, the most relaxed part of the event began: pizza, casual conversations and plenty of curious questions.

But the true highlight of the afternoon? The playful interaction between our robotic guests.

Flattering Bob happily complimented the humanoid robot visitor, who replied with heart emojis and the two new tech friends wandered off into the metaphorical sunset of the evosoft HQ.

Because yes: research really does bring people (and robots) together.
And if you don’t believe it… you’ll just have to come and see for yourself. πŸ˜‰
